Nordic Horn Seminar 2026

Welcome to the 23rd Nordic Horn Seminar in Oslo, Norway on the 2nd to 5th of july. We invite horn players of all ages and levels to a weekend filled with music making, inspiration, networking and new knowledge.

This year’s event is all about doing, so the sessions are designed for you to participate rather than passive listening.

There will be panel debates, technique clinics and of course fantastic concerts where everyone will get the chance to both play and listen.

The first day of the seminar is dedicated to children, who will get the chance to participate in a fantastic workshop led by Cecilie Therese Nereng and kick off the seminar for everyone else with a concert on the afternoon of the 2. july.

The practical stuff:
We do not organize accommodation for participants.

What can you expect at the seminar?

Concerts

Throughout the seminar there will be a series of concerts – from an opening concert showcasing our different contributors to late night live electronics. Our main artists Radovan Vlatkovic and Paula Ernesaks will participate in multiple concerts with both standard as well as less known repertoire and premieres of brand new pieces. You will get the chance to hear performances by our nordic artists, and it will be a great occasion to discover new music for the horn. There will of course also be horn ensemble in all sizes.

There will be concerts every evening Thursday – Saturday, as well as day time concerts on Friday and Saturday. On the main concert on Saturday we are happy to share that the amazing Engegård String Quartet is performing with Radovan and Paula as well as a piece on their own. On Saturday there is also a world premier of a new piece written by Marcus Paus. Other highlights include live electronics and Strauss’ second Horn concerto for 8 horns!

Master classes & workshops

Artistry, improvisation, practicing better, how to use the body correctly are some of the diverse areas of expertise the artists and contributors will cover during the seminar. The different master classes, workshops and clinics will be adapted to suit participants of different skill levels. Masterclasses are an important part of the seminar, especially for students and young professionals

What is a master class? A masterclass is a public lesson, where a participant plays something for a teacher/artist in front of an audience. The teacher holds a public lesson in front of the audience.

Can anyone play? Yes, everyone can participate in a masterclass if you want to work on a solo piece or audition repertoire.

Do I have to participate by playing? Not at all, you can enjoy the seminar without playing in a masterclass if you do not have solo repertoire you want to work on. You are welcome to participate in any masterclass as audience.

We will try our best to make sure everyone who wishes to, will be able to play in minimum one masterclass, hopefully more. In this form you can fill in your priorities of who you would like to play for. You can also fill in your desired repertoire, so the pianists can prepare.

Masterclasses with special topics:

Mozart masterclass: Ah… Mozart! The eternal audition concertos. This masterclass is dedicated to the man, the myth, the legend, Mozart. Steadily guided by Radovan Vlatkovic, we will dive into the classical style and unlock even more layers of the pieces we have played all our lives.
U26 masterclass: We will lock the doors for this masterclass! No scary, old solo horn players allowed. A safe space to play and have fun with the one and only, Frøydis Ree Wekre. Target: Everyone under 26 years old.
Excerpt workshop: Are you dreaming of playing in the Berlin Phil? Now you at least get the chance to play together with an orchestra member. Paula Ernesaks will play and coach standard excerpts. Target: students/young professionals

Workshops and clinics

We will post more on the workshops and clinics later, but here are some topics to peak your interest:
– Community, trust and the magic of music
– The basics of chord-based improvisation
– Rune’s horn gadgets
– The physical aspect of sound and strength in playing
– Smart practicing and preventing injuries
– High horn clinic
– Low horn clinic

Ensemble playing

There will both be ensemble playing lead by great players, for different levels, and also possibilities to get together and play something just for fun. At the end of the seminar we will play everyone together in a huge ensemble!

Social

The Nordic Horn Seminar is about making new acquantences, inspiring each other and the social aspect is as important as playing. Quiz, sauna, speed dating and sight reading-nachspiel – the days will be tightly packed with activities to join.

Horn makers exhibitions

Looking for a new horn? Or curious about other models? At the seminar we will have several well-known brands. Alexander, Paxman, Ricco Kühn and BRIZ horns will be coming and bringing models for sale. In Sentralens’s nice premises you will have a good opportunity to test horns over several days, and you don’t have to travel to other cities and countries in Europe.

In addition to the established exhibitors, we will open up for buying and selling of horns and equipment from private individuals. Here you will have the opportunity to buy used horns, mouthpieces, sheet music and other equipment. A good chance to make a bargain! Do you have something you would like to sell? We will provide updates here and on social media with more info as the seminar gets closer.
